The red variety Malvasía di Schierano is one of many varieties from the Malvasia family in Italy . It is used for sweet red and rosé wines and a sparkling wine . The variety is named after the hamlet of Schierano , which is part of the municipality of Passerano Marmorito .

The variety is approved in the provinces of Turin and Asti in the Piedmont region. The planted area is approx. 95 hectares (as of 1998).

The late-ripening variety is very vigorous, high-yielding and delivers good yields. It is very robust against powdery mildew . The wines are often used in blends with the Freisa variety . The variety eventually finds its way into the DOC - wine Malvasia di Castelnuovo Don Bosco . The grape variety produces garnet-red wines with a not very distinctive, but their own aroma . Ampelographic varietal characteristics

In ampelography , the habitus is described as follows:

  • The shoot tip is open. It is slightly woolly hairy, with a slight carmine tinge. The light green young leaves are hairy like a cobweb.
  • The medium-sized, almost pentagonal leaves are five-lobed and barely curved (see also the article leaf shape ). The stalk bay is closed like a lyre. The sheet is serrated to a point. The teeth are medium-sized compared to the grape varieties.
  • The cylindrical to cone-shaped grape is medium-sized and moderately dense. The slightly elliptical berries are medium-sized and dark bluish-black in color. The grapes have a thick berry pod and a very light nutmeg aroma.

The grape variety ripens approx. 32 - 35 days after the Gutedel and thus belongs to the grape varieties of the late third ripening period (see the chapter in the article grape variety). It is therefore considered to ripen very late. The vigorous variety is high-yielding. Malvasia di Schierano is a variety of the noble grapevine ( Vitis vinifera ).
