Mari Jászai (actually Maria Krippel) (born February 24, 1850 in Ászár , Komorn county , † October 5, 1926 in Budapest ) was a Hungarian actress .

Born the daughter of a carpenter, she worked as a nanny at the age of 10, after which she became a servant in Vienna and Budapest . She was a canteen employee during the battle of Königgrätz . She disliked her actual name Krippel so much that she even removed it from her birth certificate because the German meaning of the word sounds like Krüppel. In the company of Gusztáv Hubay, she secretly disappeared at the age of 16 to Székesfehérvár and started working there as an extra. She played in Buda as early as 1867 and contracted to Kolozsvári Állami Magyar Színház in 1869 . She met her first husband Vidor Kassai (comedian) during her stay in Buda, from whom she separated after two years of marriage.

In 1872 she became a member of the Nemzeti Színház , to which she remained loyal until her death, only in 1900 she moved to the Vígszínház for only one year . In her first performance she played Gertrud in Bánk bán by József Katona . In 1893 she taught at the Academy of Dramatic Arts in Budapest for a year. She was considered to be a devourer of men, but admitted that she was living through her connections in depth, but after her divorce she never married again.

Artistic qualities

She was a natural, and she deepened her knowledge with constant study. She shone especially in tragedies, played the female roles from Shakespeare such as Antigone, Jokaste, Elektra, Cleopatra, Queen Margit, Lady Macbeth, Volumnia, Goneril, Konstanse, the nurse's wife and Capulet she had portrayed with outstanding talent - she played her last role in Richard III as Gloster's widow. She told the poems of Sándor Petőfi with passion and skill, among other things in the evening performances for the workers. She also translated Ibsen's John Gabriel Borkmann , who was performed by the Nemzeti Színház (Theater in Budapest). Jászai played in at least 300 roles. Her diaries were published after her death in 1926, and her notes are valuable for future generations from a theater history perspective.
