Background to the namesake

Memorial plaque at the entrance to the park

Maria Amalie Jankowski was born on May 11, 1887 in Ottmachau , but lived in Köpenick before the outbreak of the First World War . In 1912 she became a member of the SPD and entered the district assembly. There she held the office of city councilor for four years from 1920 and was involved in welfare and youth care. In March 1933 she fell into the hands of members of the SA in the course of the Köpenick Blood Week and was badly mistreated. Jankowski showed the public her wounds and then had to hide from the Nazis . She managed to survive the war. After another active phase as a politician in the SPD, she switched to the SED shortly before her death . Jankowski died on July 23, 1946. On the occasion of her 114th birthday, a stone with a plaque was placed on the edge of the park.

history

The green area is already marked on old maps from the 1950s, albeit without a name. In 1998 the district assembly decided to name the square after Jankowski. However, the head of the Green Spaces Office was of the opinion that the area was already popularly known as Veteranenplatz . It is named after the old Kathreiner villa adjoining the park, where war veterans are said to have met. However, a local museum director contradicted this and referred to the use as a residential building (retirement home) or the temporary replacement for the town hall and the employment office. A survey of older residents of Köpenick showed that the name was not known. The area has since been shown on official maps as Maria Jankowski Park . On July 23, 2007, on the occasion of Jankowski's 120th birthday, the adjacent street was renamed from D7 to Am Maria-Jankowski-Park .

The copper beech , which characterizes the area as a natural monument, is, however, in the Veterans Park according to the corresponding ordinance from 1993.

It is planned to set up a generation space in the park for 150,000 euros.
