Maria Magdalena Church, Freiburg-Rieselfeld

Maria Magdalena is the church center in the Rieselfeld district of the city of Freiburg im Breisgau in the brutalist style . The compact concrete building is used biconfessionally by the parishes of the two major Christian denominations, the Roman Catholic parish of St. Maria Magdalena and the Protestant parish in Rieselfeld.

history

A Protestant and a Catholic church were originally planned for the Rieselfeld district in the west of the city of Freiburg, which has been newly created since 1995 and has around 10,000 inhabitants. Since the two parishes that were created wanted to appear together as "Church in Rieselfeld", the idea of two churches under one roof was born. The city of Freiburg supported the idea by making a plot of land available in a central location in the district. The architect Susanne Gross from the Cologne office of Kister Scheiterhauer Gross was able to win the subsequent architectural competition, which was announced in 1999, after the decision of a specialist jury . After the groundbreaking ceremony and the laying of the foundation stone in 2002, the building was erected in 2003 and 2004 and consecrated on July 25, 2004. The construction costs amounted to 5.7 million euros.
