Maria Grausenburger (born April 20, 1901 , † December 22, 1973 ) was a farmer and war widow living in Grafenwörth ( Lower Austria ) .

Life

Maria lived alone with her daughter on a farm until the end of 1944 when she took in a Jewish refugee family from Hungary . The mother and her three children had fled a " death march " from Vienna / Floridsdorf with the goal of the Mauthausen concentration camp. Maria told the local mayor that a fascist family from Hungary, who had fled from the Red Army , had found shelter with her. The refugee family, which used to be called "Weiss", was now called "Varga" in Hungarian. She received official identification documents and work.

As the Red Army approached, the foreign families were gathered in a prison camp . Because the camp commandant liked the drawings by the young man from the Varga family, the whole family was allowed to return to Grafenwörth.

In the meantime, however, German soldiers had quartered themselves in almost every house, including Maria Grausenburger's farm. Despite the great danger she was facing, Maria Grausenburger took the risk and hid the family in her cellar. Even when neighbors accused Grausenberger of providing shelter, she held out and risked her life for that of the children. Until the Soviet troops marched in, three months later, the Weiss (Varga) family was able to stay with Maria Grausenburger.

Honors

In 1978 Maria Grausenburger was honored by the Yad Vashem in Jerusalem as Righteous Among the Nations .

On the initiative of the historian Ingrid Oberndorfer, a monument to Maria Grausenburger was inaugurated on June 25, 2010 in Grafenwörth.
