Maria Homscheid

Maria Homscheid (born December 19, 1872 in Herdorf , Altenkirchen district (then Rhine Province , now Rhineland-Palatinate ), † September 17, 1948 there ) was a German native writer. She described the beauty of the landscape, the character of the people in this region, the hard work and the meager life of the people in mining, in the Hauberg and in agriculture. She became known far beyond the borders of her home region. In the history of literature one can occasionally find comparisons with Annette von Droste-Hülshoff .

She was born in Herdorf in Siegerland in 1872 as the daughter of a basalt tipper and worked as a dump girl in the Siegerland mining industry in her youth. In 1905 she followed her brother Albert to Ittel in the Eifel, where she lived and worked as his parsonage. In 1912 she came to Lieser on the Moselle, where her brother, the canon of honor and Koblenz city dean, Monsignor Albert Homscheid , had been transferred as pastor. In 1920 he moved to Koblenz . She lived there until the spring of 1948 before moving back to Herdorf , where she died on September 17, 1948. Her brother became Herdorf's first honorary citizen on March 16, 1951. The Herdorf Titus Kötting was a nephew of the famous local poet Maria Homscheid and published a handwritten manuscript "My life as a miner" in 1988, four years before his death. It was only published as a book under this title in 2005.

A primary school in Herdorf was named after the poet.
