Maria Meeresstern is the Roman Catholic Church on the East Frisian island of Borkum .

history

Borkum, whose population has been Protestant since the Reformation , has experienced a structural change since the middle of the 19th century as a result of spa tourism. On the initiative of the Münster priest Carl Böddinghaus , to whom a bronze plaque on the church has been commemorating since 2003, the Catholic chapel with the patronage of Maria Meeresstern was built in 1880/1882 . It was built in neo-Gothic forms as geostete small brick - hall church with transept and lanterns - roof skylights . As early as 1905 it was extended to the west by a yoke . In 1954 a multi-purpose church hall was added to the east.

The church got its present appearance in 1987/1988 with the addition of a modern enlargement in the west with the lines of the neo-Gothic building with a spacious gallery and the new bronze portal. At the same time it received a tall and slender octagonal bell tower with a four-part bell. Two years later, the modern parish hall and the redesign of the church square followed.
