Mies is the seventh of twelve siblings and grew up in the Vulkaneifel . In the 1960s, Maria Mies worked for five years at the Goethe Institute in India . She has been active in the women's movement and women's research since the late 1960s . In 1979 she founded the focus on Women and Development at the Institute of Social Studies in The Hague ( Netherlands ) . Her main research interests: methods of women's studies , rural women in the First and Third World , capitalism and subsistence , criticism of genetic engineering , alternatives to the globalized economy . The philosopher Annegret Stopczyk writes about her in her book Sophias Leib : “Maria Mies, a professor who exercised radical criticism of science in the 1970s and called for the 'subjective factor' of researchers (1984), has been violently attacked and isolated by career women who are immanent in science . “The belligerent and belligerent intellectual retired in 1993, but is still active in the feminist and globalization-critical movement, for example at Attac Cologne - although, unlike many fellow campaigners , for example at Attac , she attaches importance to not being a globalization critic , but an opponent of globalization to be mentioned, because it takes the approach of localizing instead of globalizing .

Maria Mies in Germany, the committee opposition to the May co-founded, for the first time on the West German public OECD treaties Multilateral Agreement on Investment has informed (MAI). This eventually fell after France had distanced itself from it. Similar goals are still pursued through the WTO Agreement on the Privatization of Services and Public Goods ( GATS ). Mies' criticism is directed against the inadequate democratic control of international financial and trade institutions such as the WTO, IMF and World Bank , but also the EU , which is leading to global impoverishment. In general, it made an early contribution to the international networking of the movement critical of globalization. Since the late 1990s she has been particularly concerned with the connection between neoliberal , corporate-controlled globalization and the new permanent wars . She is married to Saral Sarkar .

She is one of the initiators of the “Cologne appeal against computer violence”, which called for a ban on “ killer games ”.
