The St. Marien Church is a Roman Catholic church in the center of Bremerhaven . It belongs to the parish Hl. Herz Jesu Bremerhaven-Lehe in the Dean's Office Bremerhaven of the Diocese of Hildesheim and is consecrated to the Immaculate Conception of Mary.

history

On June 18, 1867, St. Mary's Church was consecrated by the Apostolic Provicer of the Nordic Missions, Osnabrück Bishop Johannes Heinrich Beckmann . It was a single-nave neo-Gothic hall church with a transept and a 49 m high tower in the west. Until 1911 it was the only Catholic church in Bremerhaven, Lehe and Geestemünde . Initially, St. Marien belonged to the Apostolic Vicariate of the North as a branch church of St. Johann in Bremen , from 1929 to June 30, 1969 it belonged directly to the Diocese of Osnabrück .

On September 18, 1944, the church, like almost the entire city center, was almost completely destroyed.
In 1952 the church was rebuilt as a neo-Romanesque basilica with narrow aisles and no transept. A folding roof was erected on the preserved stump of the tower.
On December 8, 1952, St. Mary's Church was rededicated by Auxiliary Bishop Johannes von Rudloff with a large number of parishioners .

In 1968, the alterations in the chancel began in accordance with the guidelines of the Second Vatican Council .

Furnishing

St. Marien is rich in works of Christian art from the 1950s and 1960s.

The Osnabrück sculptor Walter Mellmann created the altar in the chancel with depictions of the four evangelists , the triumphal cross above the altar with four medallions: Birth of Jesus, Transfiguration, Resurrection and Second Coming, the ambo to the right of it with three medals: St. Willehad , St. Ansgar and St. Rimbert , and the tabernacle stele on the apse . To the left of the choir is the stand for the Easter candle with the representation of the Holy Trinity; next to it is the bronze mural “The women at the empty grave”. Right in front of the choir is the lecture cross he created.

In the left aisle in front the sculpture Holy Family takes the appropriate place, in the back the sculpture St. Anthony . In the right aisle in front stands the sculpture Maria as the patroness of the church. Like the other sculptures, Walter Mellmann created the meter-high crucifix in the confessional room at the back right.

According to the drafts of the Osnabrück glass painter Theo M. Landmann , lead glass windows with round arches were created in the entire nave and in the chancel: nine twin arched windows in the upper aisle of the main nave with laws of the rosary, six twin arched windows in the side aisles, bottom row from left: important people and events in ecclesiastical history from the death of Peter 67 to the proclamation of the dogma of the bodily acceptance of Mary into heaven on 1.XI.1956. Individual representations are: Benedict and Bonifatius on the left, Willehad, Ignatius and the Immaculate Conception (Mary on the right); three twin arched windows in the chancel: "Lauretanische Litanei" and "Ave Maria", two twin arched windows in the so-called sister choir on the north wall: "Sonnengesang", a three-part arched window in the former baptistery, a window on the south wall in the tower: " Vincent from Paul ”.

His wife Ruth Landmann created 15 stations of the Way of the Cross in the side aisles from ceramic using plate technology, the baptismal font to the left of the choir with a representation of the twelve apostles made of ceramic using plate technology and to the right of the choir the sculpture "Mother Anna and Maria" made of ceramic using free assembly technology the mural made of ceramic in plate technology "Perpetual Help" in the northern entrance area below the organ gallery and the mural "Pietà" also made of ceramic in plate technology at the rear right (south side).

The metal sculptor Eva Burgeff-Kerckhoff created the tabernacle cabinet made of copper with the representation of the lamb and the book with seven seals and the pelican, and the lid of the baptismal font with the representation of the Holy Spirit as a dove.

On the west tower of the church there is a half-sculpture Madonna with a protective cloak above the main portal.

Carillon

Since the unstable tower of the church did not allow large chimes, it was decided to buy a carillon. It was decided to use three larger bells and 24 small bells. The melodies that are to be played are recorded and saved using a manual and a computer with game programs. On December 8, 1984, the carillon rang for the first time from the tower of St. Mary's Church in Grazer Strasse .
