Works

"What is immediately noticeable in his work is the safe and material-appropriate mastery of the craft, he knows the nervous liveliness of wood, the brittleness of stubborn stone and the dark power of metal."

- Hanns-Gerd Rabe

Works in public space

Osnabrueck is located in the Great Street in the center of the so-called Fountain of Tears in 1973. The siblings bronze at the intersection Hasetorwall / Stüve Street also date from the 1970s. For the community of Fehndorf , Mellmann created a sandstone Pietà in 1960 as a war memorial.

In 2007 a granite corridor cross was consecrated in Öflingen . The bronze reliefs for this were cast according to a design by Mellmann. In 2001 , Cardinal Joachim Meisner inaugurated a Way of the Cross in Bonn , the trachyte steles of which by Rainer Page bear bronze reliefs by Mellmann. The 15 stations of a pilgrimage and cyclist's way of the cross created in 2015 in the northwest of the city of Emmerich are also designed with bronze reliefs by Mellmann, which are embedded in granite steles .

Works in churches

In 1935 Mellmann carved a Pietà for the Liebfrauengemeinde in Arnsberg . It is located in the new church from 1972/1974, which replaced a previous building. In 1936 Mellmann created a patronage for St. Walburgis in Menden with the representation of St. Walburga. He executed the nativity scene for St. Johann in Osnabrück as a block nativity scene. The main group was completed in 1947; it was continuously supplemented by individual figures until 1990. Ten nativity figures from Mellmann belong to the furnishings of St. Pius in Osnabrück. In the church of St. Jacobus the Elder in Bad Iburg- Glane there is an altar by Mellmann from 1970.

For the Herz-Jesu-Kirche in Bremerhaven -Geestemünde he made the altar, ambo, baptism, a tabernacle stele and tabernacle doors. He created the ambo, altar and tabernacle for the St. Lambertus Church in Ostercappeln in 1977/1978.

14 stations of the cross made of bronze are Mellmann's work in the church of St. Martin in Meinerzhagen . Carved Stations of the Cross, which were located in St. Michael in Emden , came to the Church of St. Walburga in Emden in 2005 after the restoration . In Lübeck there are 14 stations of the cross made of bronze and the sculpture of St. Vicelin in the church of St. Vicelin, built in 1955/1956. Bronze reliefs also form the stations of the cross in the Catholic church built in 1884 on the North Sea island of Norderney.

Walter Mellmann also created the St. Ansgar Medal, which was reissued in 1992.
