history

prehistory

With the establishment of Bremerhaven in 1827, the Lehe area also gained in importance. Between 1885 and 1905 its population increased from 10,011 to 31,826. The capacity of the Catholic Church Immaculate Conception of Mary from 1867 in Bremerhaven on Grünen Strasse (today Grazer Strasse ) was no longer sufficient, so that from 1900 the planning of parish churches for the then independent communities of Lehe and Geestemünde began. An anonymous donor promised 60,000 gold marks for the construction of both churches .

The St. Joseph Kirchbauverein was founded in 1906 and the Lehe parish in March 1908.

Planning and building

The planning contract was awarded to the architect Maximilian Jagielski from Hanover , who had made a name for himself through Catholic church buildings in historicist styles.

Jagielski designed a neo - Gothic three - aisled basilica with Art Nouveau elements , which was built from 1910 to 1911. The building was given a red stone facade. The church has a covered with red tiles pitched roof . The church is 48.80 meters long, 21.80 meters wide and the nave is around 12 meters high.

The powerful 55-meter high tower with a square sharp spire stands sideways on the south / east side. A small extension on the north / west side wears a hexagonal helmet.

The church was consecrated on August 13, 1911 by Bishop Adolf Bertram . On April 12, 1919, the parish was elevated to a parish.

It survived the bombing of the Second World War almost undamaged. In 1948 it got its first organ, which was replaced by a new organ with 42 registers in 1981 after a complete renovation and interior redesign in 1973 . In 1990/91 there was another renovation, especially the interior with its white and light-colored plastered surfaces on the walls and vaults. The church also received 42 concrete piles to stabilize the foundations. In 1991 the first restored windows returned to the church after 18 years.

In 2002 the Herz-Jesu-Kirche in Lehe was placed under monument protection.
