Maria da Piedade de Jesus

Maria da Piedade de Jesus (* 1963 in Moçâmedes ) is an Angolan African archaeologist and anthropologist . She has been Angola's Minister of Culture since June 2019 .

Life

She first attended primary school in the Município Chongorói in the province of Benguela and in the city of Benguela , where she also finished secondary school. At the age of 12 she became a member of the youth organization OPA of the MPLA in Chongorói . Since 1982 she was employed as a research assistant at the Museu Nacional de Arqueologia there. She obtained her first degree in history from the Universidade Agostinho Neto in Benguela, her master’s degree (2004) and the Diplôme d'études approfondies (DEA) (2005) in African archeology from the Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne , where she studied paleoanthropology in 2010 received his doctorate.

From 2006–2013 she was a lecturer in archeology at the Universidade Katyavala Bwila (formerly Universidade Agostinho Neto) in Benguela, 2015–2017 lecturer and head of the department of archeology and anthropology at the Universidade Agostinho Neto in Luanda . As coordinator, she put the Mbanza Kongo project on the UNESCO World Heritage List on July 8, 2017 . In the same function, she is also trying to bring the prehistoric rock art of Chitundo-Hulo onto this list.

Political career

Since 2005 she has been a member of the Angolan women's organization ( Organização da Mulher Angolana ). In 2013 Maria da Piedade de Jesus was appointed General Director of the Institute for National Heritage ( Instituto Nacional do Património Cultural ), in the same year she was also head of the school administration in the city center of Benguela, 2014-2015 in Coqueiro and 2016-2018 in Cacuaco . In June 2019, she was appointed Minister of Culture by President João Lourenço , succeeding Carolina Cerqueira ; before that, she was State Secretary in this ministry.
