Maria de Matteis (born March 6, 1898 in Florence , Italy , † December 9, 1988 in Rome ) was an Italian costume designer .

Life

Born in Florence, she received her artistic training in her hometown and then worked as an illustrator of fairy tale books. De Matteis made her first contact with the theater through the established stage costume designer Gino Carlo Sensani and became his assistant. In the early years of the sound film she tried her luck in Cinecittà and assisted a. a. 1937 with the elaborate costume creation for the propagandistic-tendentious historical material " Karthagos Fall " . It was only late, on the eve of the Second World War , that Maria de Matteis was able to work independently in film for the first time. She quickly advanced to become the most important representative of her field in Italy, who in the next half century provided a wealth of domestic and Italian-made international films and, most recently, lavish television productions with costumes. During these decades she collaborated with some of the most important directors of her time, including Luchino Visconti , Alberto Lattuada , Orson Welles , Jean Renoir , Mario Soldati , Carmine Gallone , King Vidor , Martin Ritt , Richard Fleischer , John Huston and Sergej Bondartschuk .

Despite her intensive film activity, de Matteis remained connected to the theater, where she a. a. collaborated again with Visconti and also with Franco Zeffirelli and Giorgio Strehler and took care of classical theater productions such as Shakespeare's Troilus and Cressida , Colette's “ Gigi ”, Molière's The Miser and “ Iphigenie bei den Taurern ” by Euripides in terms of costume technology and occasionally also scenography. It was only at the age of 87 that she retired into private life.
