When her husband was elected King of Spain on November 16, 1870, she became Queen of Spain. She stayed out of politics and devoted herself mainly to charitable projects. Her husband abdicated two years later, on February 11, 1873.

The couple had three children together:

  • Vittorio Emanuele, Count of Turin (* November 24, 1870 - October 10, 1946)
  • Luigi Amadeo , Duke of Abruzzo (January 29, 1873 - March 18, 1933), Vice-Admiral of the Royal Italian Navy.
