Hélène d'Orléans (1901)

Hélène Louise Françoise Henriette d'Orléans (born June 13, 1871 in Twickenham , † January 21, 1951 in Castellammare di Stabia near Naples ), Princess of Orlèans, Princess of France, Duchess of Aosta , was a daughter of the French pretender to the throne Louis Philipp von Orléans and the wife of Duke Emanuel Philibert of Aosta .

Life

Hélène d'Orléans (1885)

As the daughter of the French pretender to the throne Louis Philippe Albert d'Orléans and the Spanish Infanta Maria Isabella d'Orléans-Montpensier , Hélène was a member of the House of Orléans and a direct descendant of the last King of France, Louis Philip I (1773-1850).

It was customary to form marriage alliances between ruling royalty and deposed dynasties - as was the case with the House of Orleans after its dethronement in 1848. Like her sister Amélie von Orléans , who married the Portuguese King Charles I , Hélène was to marry into a European royal family. Hélène's aspirants in 1890 were Prince Albert Viktor (1864-1892), the eldest son of the English King Edward VII , and the future Tsar Nicholas II of Russia . Hélène refused, however, to give up her Catholic faith and to convert to the Anglican or the Russian Orthodox Church , whereby both marriage plans failed.

On June 25, 1895, she finally married Duke Emanuel Philibert of Aosta (1869–1931), to whom she bore two sons: Amadeus and Aimone .

Due to health problems, Hélène often traveled to Africa and the Far East. She passed on her fascination for the black continent to her older son Amadeus, who later became the viceroy of Ethiopia . From 1911 to 1921 he worked for the Italian Red Cross in Africa and received several military awards. In 1947 he donated the “Aosta Collection” to the National Library of Naples , consisting of books and unusual African objects as well as a collection of photographs.

After the death of her husband Emanuel in 1931, the Duchess married Colonel Otto Campini (1872–1951) in 1936 .
