Mariam Petrosyan ( Armenian Մարիամ Պետրոսյան ; born August 10, 1969 in Yerevan , Armenian SSR , Soviet Union ) is an Armenian painter, cartoonist and author. Her best-known book is the award-winning Das Haus, in der… ( Russian Дом, в котором ...English The Gray house , 2009), which has been translated into many languages.

biography

Mariam Petrosjan graduated from the State College of Fine Arts “Panos Terlemesjan” in Yerevan and became a cartoonist at the Armenfilm film studio . Then she moved to Moscow to work at the Soyuzmultfilm film studio . In 1995 she went back to Yerevan to join Armenfilm, where she worked until 2007.

Her first novel Das Haus, in der… ( Russian Дом, в котором ... ), which tells the story of a boarding school for disabled children, was published in Russian in 2009 and became a bestseller. He was nominated for the Russian Booker Prize in 2010 and received several awards and nominations, including the Russian Prize for Best Book in Russian by a Foreign Author .

The book has been translated several times:  Italian La casa del tempo sospeso 2011, Hungarian Abban a házban 2012, Polish Dom, w którym ... 2013, Spanish La casa de los otros 2015, French La Maison dans laquelle 2016, Czech Dům, ve kterém 2016 and Macedonian Домот во кој ... 2016.

The English edition was published worldwide on April 25, 2017 by Amazon Publishing . It was shortlisted for the Read Russia Prize 2018. Petrosjan's literary agency announced sales rights for Bulgarian, Danish, Latvian and Norwegian.

Excerpts from the novel (in the English translation by Andrew Bromfield) were performed by Stephen Fry  in the film Russia's Open Book: Writing in the Age of Putin .

The author's only other book is the short fairy tale about a dog that could fly ( Russian Сказка про собаку, которая умела летать ), which was published in 2014.

Personal

Mariam Petrosjan is the great-granddaughter of the Armenian painter Martiros Sarjan . She is married to the Armenian graphic artist Artasches Stambolzjan. The couple have two children.
