Marian Niemiec (* 17th February 1961 in Kobielice (Kobielitz) , Silesian Voivodeship , Poland ) is a Polish Lutheran theologian and since 2014 Bishop of the Diocese of Katowice (Katowice) of the Evangelical Augsburg Church in Poland .

Live and act

Marcin Niemiec studied Protestant theology at the Christian Theological Academy in Warsaw until 1984 and completed training-related community internships in Konin and Stare Bielsko (Old Bielitz) . On November 24, 1985, he was in Mikołów (Nikolai) as pastor of the Evangelical Augsburg Church in Poland by the presiding bishop Janusz Narzyński ordained . Afterwards he worked as a clergyman in Stare Bielsko and Opole (Opole) , attended the University of Opole for further theological studies , where he obtained a doctorate in ecumenical theology under Professor Zygfryd Glaeser in 2007 .

Between 2002 and 2012, Niemiec was Councilor of the Katowice Diocese and Deputy Bishop. Since 2011 he has also been senior church councilor in the consistory of the Evangelical-Augsburg Church of Poland in Warsaw .

One focus of Niemiec's work is diakonia . So he founded an evangelical hospice and a lending station for rehabilitation equipment. Since 2004 he has been President of the Hospice Foundation in Opole.

In spring 2014 Niemiec was appointed pastor of the Resurrection Parish in Katowice . A little later the diocesan synod elected him bishop of the Katowice diocese for a 10-year term . As the successor to Bishop Tadeusz Szurman , who died in 2014 , he was introduced to his office on September 14, 2014.

Marian Niemiec is married and has two children.
