Marianne Frostig

Marianne Frostig (born March 31, 1906 in Vienna ; † June 21, 1985 in Fulda ) worked as a social worker, teacher and psychologist.

She became known for her holistic, child-oriented, pedagogical-therapeutic support, especially for children with partial performance disorders, learning disorders, emotionally and socially disadvantaged children. Marianne Frostig combined elements of education, psychology, neurology, neuropsychology and sociology in her work. She was the founder and director of the Marianne Frostig Center of Educational Therapy in Los Angeles . Today's Frostig Center is located in Pasadena , California .

In her approach she put great emphasis on:

  • diagnostic observation and assessment of a child's strengths and difficulties
  • Customization
  • motivation
  • diverse methodology
  • systematic approach

The "Frostig Developmental Test of Visual Perception" (FEW), published in Germany in 1972 and named after her, became known and developed as the "Developmental Test of Visual Perception" (DTVP) from 1958 to 1961 with colleagues. This made a diagnostic differentiation of visual perception possible (visual-motor coordination, figure-ground perception , perceptual constancy, perception of the spatial position and spatial relationships). She has physical education among many other publications . New ways of curative education developed and published.

Frostig's “Educational Therapy” is being further developed in Germany by the International Frostig Society.
