Marianne Schmid Mast (born January 17, 1965 in Olten ) is a Swiss psychologist. She is Professor of Organizational Behavior at the Faculty of Economics (HEC, Faculté des Hautes Études Commerciales) at the University of Lausanne .

biography

Marianne Schmid Mast was born in Olten and graduated from primary school in Däniken , Canton Solothurn . When she was 10 years old, her family moved to Oberkulm and she attended the district school in Unterkulm and then the commercial school (Alte Kantonschule Aarau ) in Aarau. After receiving her commercial diploma, she completed her business diploma at the École Supérieure de Commerce in Neuchâtel . After working for a computer company for a year, she traveled in Brazil for 6 months. She then began her medical studies at the University of Zurich and discovered her passion for psychology. So she began her psychology studies at the University of Zurich. Her research interest has always been in social interactions in the workplace, which led her to become a full professor of organizational behavior at the University of Lausanne. Marianne Schmid Mast is married and has two sons. The family lives in Pully .

academic career

Marianne Schmid Mast received her Masters in Psychology in 1996 and her PhD in Psychology in 2000, both from the University of Zurich . She then continued her research at Northeastern University , USA, in social and personality psychology, in collaboration with Judith A. Hall. Back in Switzerland at the University of Zurich in social and health psychology, she became an assistant professor in social psychology at the University of Friborg . In 2006 she was appointed full professor for personnel psychology at the University of Neuchâtel at the Institute for Work and Organizational Psychology. In August 2014, she was appointed to the Faculty of Economics at the University of Lausanne as a full professor of organizational behavior. In 2018 she was ranked among the 50 most influential psychologists worldwide and is a Fellow of the Society of Personality and Social Psychology, as well as Division 8 of the American Psychology Association (APA) [9] for her outstanding, innovative and long-term research contributions in personality and social psychology.

research

In her research, she is interested in how people interact with one another in hierarchical structures, how they perceive one another and how they communicate with one another verbally and non-verbally. In addition, she studies how the first impression we make of a person influences social interaction with that person and how we make accurate judgments about others. Marianne Schmid Mast also examines the communication between doctor and patient. She uses virtual reality techniques to investigate social interaction and communication behavior and uses computer-based automatic sensing to study non-verbal social behavior.

Virtual reality

Marianne Schmid Mast started her virtual reality laboratory at the University of Neuchâtel in 2006. The laboratory then moved with her to the Faculty of Economics (HEC) at the University of Lausanne in 2014. She uses virtual reality to study human social behavior and to train social skills.
