Marianne Sommer

Marianne Sommer (born 1971) is a Swiss cultural scientist .

Life

Sommer studied English literature and linguistics as well as biology at the Universities of Zurich and Coventry (UK). From 1997 to 2000 she wrote her dissertation in the history of science at the University of Zurich on anthropomorphism and anthropocentrism in National Geographic articles on non-human primates . During the following four years she received two postdoc positions at the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science (Berlin) and at the American National Science Foundation at the Pennsylvania State University in the Science, Medicine and Technology in Culture program.

From 2004 to 2010 she was senior assistant at the chair for science research at ETH Zurich . In 2007 she received the Venia Legendi for the history of science and science research.

From 2010, Sommer held an SNSF professorship for the history of science and science research at the Research Center for Social and Economic History at the University of Zurich. In 2011, she moved to the University of Lucerne with her SNSF research team .

Since 2011, Sommer has been a full professor of cultural studies in the integrated cultural studies course at the University of Lucerne.
