The Maribo Cathedral (Danish Maribo Domkirke ) is the cathedral church of the Lolland-Falster diocese of the Evangelical Lutheran Danish People's Church and one of the most important works of brick Gothic in Denmark .

Monastery church and bishopric

The Maribo Monastery of the Birgit Order was founded in 1416 by the Danish king Erik von Pomerania in the village of Skimminge on the banks of Søndersø in the center of the island of Lolland , the land for which was donated by Queen Margaret I. The city of Maribo was built near the monastery . With the Reformation in 1556, the monastery was converted into a noble women's monastery , which only existed until 1621.

When the diocese of Lolland-Falster was created through the division of the Diocese of Roskilde in 1924, the parish and former monastery church became the bishopric.

building

The nave was built soon after the monastery was founded, but was expanded as early as 1450–70. The tower was only built in 1500, but had to be demolished and rebuilt around 1740. The exterior of the cathedral is characterized by the red bricks and the stepped gables characteristic of Danish churches .

The three-aisled hall church has star vaults in the central nave and ribbed vaults in the side aisles . The angles at the top of the vault are relatively large. The choir with a rectangular end is as wide as the rest of the nave. The two westernmost yokes, on the other hand, are slightly drawn in.

Hall church with small galleries

In the choir and above the organ there are remains of the medieval fresco painting.

The decoration of the church also includes the oldest canvas painting in Northern Europe, a representation of the order's founder Birgitta of Sweden from the 15th century. The furnishings have been renewed and supplemented over the centuries; Pulpit, altar and baptismal font are baroque , i.e. after the Reformation.

Of the convent buildings of the monastery, only ruins remain, which are to the west of the church.

Cathedral treasure

A precious communion chalice from the 15th century with engraved scenes from the Passion of Christ is probably a gift from Queen Margaret I at the time .
