Marie-Esmeralda of Belgium, Lady Moncanda (completely Maria-Esmeralda Adelheid Liliane Anna Leopoldine ) (born September 30, 1956 in Brussels ) is a journalist , author , documentary filmmaker and a princess of the Belgian royal family .

Career

Princess Marie-Esmeralda is the youngest daughter of King Leopold III. and his second wife, Mary Lilian Baels , who later became Princess of Réthy . She has two biological siblings and three half-siblings.

After studying law at the University of Saint-Louis in Brussels , he studied journalism and graduated from the Catholic University of Leuven . She then moved to Paris to work as a freelance journalist for the international press and magazines. She also writes under the pseudonym Esmeralda de Réthy . Her concern is the protection of the environment, women's rights, indigenous peoples and health issues.

In 2019 she was arrested on short notice as a participant in a demonstration by the social movement Extinction Rebellion in London .

The princess has been married to Salvador Moncada since 1998 . The couple have two children.
