Sr. Marie-Marthe Chambon

Marie-Marthe Chambon (born March  6, 1841 in Croix-Rouge as Francoise Chambon near Chambéry , Savoy , France ; † March 21, 1907 in Chambéry) was a French nun and mystic . With her visions she gave a decisive impetus to the spread of the devotion to the five wounds of Christ .

Life

Françoise Chambon came from a very poor background. She neither went to school nor could she read. From a young age she had an ardent devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus . In 1862 she entered the Order of the Visitation of Mary in Chambéry as a lay sister , where she took the religious name Marie-Marthe and made her profession on August 2, 1864 .

From 1866 onwards she had recurring visions. The superior of the convent of Chambéry, Sr. Thérese-Eugénie Revel, appointed a commission of priests as examiners who came to the conclusion that the mystical experiences were real. The visions dealt in particular with the five wounds of Christ, combined with the task of spreading devotion to them - as an unfolding of devotion to the Sacred Heart. Sr. Marie-Marthe is also referred to as the "Apostle of the Holy Wounds". On June 12, 1874, the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus , stigmata appeared on their feet . The matron and the novice mistress recorded the mystical experiences of their fellow sister from 1866 to 1887. The devotion to the five wounds of Christ was approved by the episcopate in 1885 and papal approval in 1924, and her prayer was connected with an indulgence .
