Marie-Thérèse d'Alverny

Marie-Thérèse d'Alverny (born January 25, 1903 in Boën-sur-Lignon , † April 29, 1991 in Paris ) was a French librarian and mediaevalist .

biography

Marie-Thérèse d'Alverny studied at the École nationale des chartes with a diploma in 1928. She also received a diploma from the École pratique des hautes études (4th section) in 1943 and received her doctorate in 1963 with a dissertation on Alain de Lille . From 1947 she was a curator in the manuscript department of the Bibliothèque nationale de France . Since 1962 she has been researching for the CNRS . Among other things, she has taught at the Center d'études supérieures de civilization médiévale in Poitiers .

In 1989 she received an honorary doctorate from the Jagiellonian University in Krakow. She was a corresponding member of the Medieval Academy of America, the British Academy and the Academia de buenas letras in Barcelona. In 1974 she was elected to the American Philosophical Society and in 1976 to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .

She did research in particular on Arabic-Latin translations and exchanges in the Middle Ages and the reception of Avicenna in the Latin Middle Ages.

In 1965 she edited texts by Alain de Lille. Most recently she began editing the works of Raymond von Marseille , continued by Charles Burnett and Emmanuel Poulle .

In 1940 she and Charles Astruc cataloged the library of classical and pre-classical German literature by the banker and bibliophile Hans Fürstenberg (1890–1982). The collection was partially lost in the Second World War.
