Marie Roze

Marie Roze (actually: Hippolyte Ponsin ; born March 2, 1846 in Paris ; † June 2, 1926 there ) was a French opera singer (mezzo-soprano).

Life

Roze was a student of Toussaint-Eugène-Ernest Mocker and Daniel-François-Esprit Auber at the Conservatoire de Paris and also took lessons from Pierre-François Wartel . In 1865 she made her debut at the Paris Opéra-Comique in Ferdinand Hérold's opera Marie . In 1868 she worked in the same house at the world premiere of the opera Le premier jour de bonheur by her teacher Auber, and in 1870 at the world premiere of Flotow's L'Ombre . At the Paris Opera in 1870 she sang Marguerite in Charles Gounod's Fausi .

In 1872 Roze was a guest at Drury Lane Theater in London, and from 1873 to 1881 she appeared regularly at Her Majesty's Theater . The title role in Georges Bizet's opera Carmen , which had been entrusted to her, she gave back in 1875 three months before its premiere at the Opéra-Comique. 1877–1878 and 1881–1882 she took part in tours of Carl Rosa's opera company. In 1885 she sang the title role in the English premiere of Jules Massenet's Manon with Rosa's company in Liverpool .

From 1890 Roze worked in Paris as a singing teacher. In 1892 she appeared in the Berlin Kroll Opera as Carmen. In 1894 she went on her farewell tour. Roze was first married to the American singer Julius Edson Perkins , second marriage to a son of the impresario James Henry Mapleson . Her son Raymond Rôze became known as a composer.
