Marie Schröder-Hanfstängl , née Marie Schröder ( April 30, 1847 in Breslau - September 5, 1917 in Munich ) was a German opera and stage singer ( soprano ) and singing teacher .

Life

Marie Schröder-Hanfstängl, the daughter of a businessman, began her vocal training in Breslau at the instigation of Freiherr von Wolhaben and several important musicians such as organist Freudenberg and organ player Schnorr von Carolsfeld , then studied for two years with Pauline Viardot-Garcia in Baden-Baden and followed it up in 1866 Paris to perfect her studies with Rossini, Charles Gounod , Delibes, Massenet and Vanucini.

In 1867 she took part in the Théâtre-Lyrique and made her debut there as "Agathe" in Freischütz. There she sang more than 60 times the “Agathe”, 120 times the “Margarethe” (studied with Gounod), 100 times the “Hilda” ( studied with Giuseppe Verdi ), further 80 times the “Queen of the Night”, 50 times “ Donna Diana "etc.

In 1870 she wanted to switch to the Italian Opera, which was prevented by the Franco-German War .

After returning to Germany, she was engaged at the court theater in Stuttgart in 1871 and in 1873 was appointed royal Württemberg chamber singer . During the World Exhibition in Vienna in 1873 she made a guest appearance with such great success that she received lucrative offers there, which she declined. From 1873 she was the wife of the photographer Erwin von Hanfstängl in Stuttgart.

In 1878 she made vocal studies with Vannuccini in Florence, where she became an honorary member of the Philharmonic Society. She then worked at the Stadt-Theater in Frankfurt and from 1895 to 1897 she taught singing to Dr. Hoch's Conservatory , where Margarete Dessoff was one of her students. In the academic year 1901/02 she taught at the Munich Academy of Music, but was suspended on June 1, 1902 due to a serious illness. After her retirement she lived in Munich.

A beautiful, excellently trained voice and brilliant virtuosity of the performance made her an excellent coloratura singer . Her best roles included: Raisin ( Barber of Seville ), Gretchen ( Gounod's Faust ), Amine ( Nightwalker ), Philine ( Mignon ), Lucia, Martha etc.

In 1902 she published a textbook Meine Lehrweise der Gesangskunst , which was based on her invention of the "vocal keyboard".
