Marie Toussaint (born May 27, 1987 in Lille ) is a French environmental activist , lawyer specializing in international environmental law and politician ( EELV ). In the course of the 2019 European elections , she won a mandate and has since been a member of the ninth European Parliament as part of the Greens / EFA group .

Life

Youth and education

Marie Toussaint was born on May 27, 1987 in Lille as the daughter of a seaman and an economics teacher. She grew up in the district Aubiers in Bordeaux on. After her school education, she studied at Sciences-Po in Paris, followed by a master's degree in international environmental law.

After her studies, she worked, among other things, as office manager for Antoinette Guhl , deputy mayor of Paris and responsible for issues relating to the social and solidarity economy. She left the city administration in 2015 to work with Julien Bayou and Valérie Cabanes to found the NGO Notre affaire à tous , which campaigns for climate justice.

Political commitment

Toussaint has been involved in various organizations such as the French Greens since her youth. In 2011 she was co-general secretary of the green youth association Jeunes écologistes . He was also involved in the Yasuní-ITT initiative, which fights for the conservation of the Ecuadorian Yasuní National Park , and the global citizens' initiative End Ecocide on Earth .

In 2019, her party, Europe Écologie-Les Verts (EELV), nominated Toussaint for the 2019 European elections list . It received 6th place on the joint list of Europe Écologie-Les Verts, Alliance écologiste indépendante (AEI) and Régions et peuples solidaires . The joint list won 13.43 percent, 13 of the 79 French mandates, including Toussaint. Since then she has been a member of the ninth European Parliament and joined the Greens / EFA group . For her group she is a member of the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy , and a deputy member of the Committee on Environment, Public Health and Food Safety and the Legal Committee .
