Life

She was born in Livorno as the daughter of the Austrian officer Anton Čop, her mother came from Mainz ; ( see also: Mainz Fortress ). As a result of the Italian Revolution, the family lost their fortune and moved to Croatia , where Berks grew up. Her first marriage was in Algeria in 1889 with the French lawyer Charles Lenger-Marlet; their daughter died after a short time. With her husband she went on various trips around the world, which took her to North Africa and various Mediterranean islands, among others. At this time she began to write about her travel impressions for various French newspapers and daily papers, including the Nouvelle revue . Contemporaries particularly emphasized her ethnographic studies on Sinti and Roma , for which she was made a corresponding honorary member by the English Gypsy Lore Society. The French Académie des Palmiers made her a member. She worked as a consultant for the Hungarian Ethnographic Society.

After the death of her first husband, Berks moved to Graz and in 1894 married the large landowner and Austrian member of the Reichstag, Hugo von Berks († 1906), with whom she had a son. The family lived at Reifenstein Castle near St. Georgen , Styria . After the death of her husband in 1906, Berks moved to Gorizia, where she died in early June 1910.

In addition to articles for newspapers and magazines, Berks wrote novellas, which appeared in Wiener Mode and in the Dioskuren Jahresbuch , as well as plays and dramas. She also translated plays into German, including Guy de Maupassants Pierre et Jean (1890 under the title Muschelkinder ).
