history

As early as the beginning of the 1870s, the Ramsthal men, who had participated in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71, promised to build a Lourdes chapel in their home town of Ramsthal after they returned home safely from the war. For some unknown reason, this vow was not carried out.

The chapel was finally built by Kaspar Wahler, who had emigrated to America and was on vacation in his home town of Ramsthal. Kaspar Wahler, who suffered from nerve cramps, prayed daily at the location of the later chapel; apparently there was a portrait of Mary here before it was built. When he was cured of his nervous disease shortly afterwards, he donated a large sum of money from his home in America to build the chapel.

A cost estimate by the Ramsthal bricklayer Adam Wahler from September 1888 was 1,040.72 gold marks . The Ramsthaler Johann Kraus and his four sons in Eltingshausen broke stones as building material for the chapel; Andreas Liebenstein made the tower cross. In May 1890, pastor A. Heller from Ramsthal successfully asked the episcopal ordinariate for permission to consecrate the chapel.

In October 1939 the chapel received a new roof and new pictures of the stations of the cross, made by Gebhard Fugel , which were consecrated by Father Ignaz Schötz, Guardian in Hammelburg , Kloster Altstadt , and are still in the chapel today. The area around the chapel was subsequently redesigned by clearing and leveling (1940) and the chapel was expanded (1942). Between 1942 and 1943, the bells from the Marienkapelle replaced the bells from the Ramsthal St. Vitus Church .

On the occasion of its centenary, the Marienkapelle moved into the focus of the Ramsthal population in 1990, which is why the local fire brigade also undertook to refresh the chapel. A thorough renovation took place in 1998, removing the soot from the candles and giving the chapel a new coat of paint. Snow guards, gutters and two new windows were also added.

In front of the chapel a lane was cut in the forest, which allows a clear view to and from the chapel.
