Mariette Mazarin

Mariette Mazarin (* 1874 ; † 1953 ) was a Belgian opera singer (soprano).

Mazarin studied at the Paris Conservatory and made his debut in 1899 under the name Mme Charles Richard at the Grand Opéra Paris in the title role of Verdi's Aida . In 1901 she sang the title role in Gustave Charpentier's Louise at the Opéra-Comique . In 1905 she appeared at the Lyon Opera House in the world premiere of Fernand Le Borne's opera Les Girondines . From 1906 to 1909 she was engaged at the Théâtre de la Monnaie in Brussels.

In 1909 she brought Oscar Hammerstein to the Manhattan Opera House , where she had great success in 1910 as Elektra in the American premiere of Richard Strauss ' opera. After the closure of the Manhattan Opera House , she returned to France and had particular success in 1911 as Elisabeth in Tannhäuser at the Paris Opera . In the same year she sang Martha in the French premiere of Eugen d'Alberts Tiefland in Nice . Other brilliant roles were the title role in Alceste by Christoph Willibald Gluck , the title role in Georges Bizet's Carmen , Brünnhilde in the Ring of the Nibelung , the title roles in Giacomo Puccini's Tosca and Richard Strauss' Salome , the Santuzza in Pietro Mascagni's Cavalleria rusticana and the title role in Jules Massenet's opera Thaïs . With a broadcast of a performance of Carmen from the Manhattan Opera House in 1910, she was also involved in what is believed to be the first radio broadcast of an opera performance. Mazarin was married to the French bass Léon Rothier .
