Marina Semyonova ( Russian Марина Тимофеевна Семёнова * May the thirtieth . Jul / 12. June  1908 greg. In St. Petersburg ; †  9. June 2010 in Moscow ) was a Russian prima ballerina .

biography

Semyonova was one of Agrippina Waganova's first students . In 1925 she graduated from the Leningrad State Choreography School and began working at the Mariinsky Theater . In 1930 she moved to the Bolshoi Theater , where she was active as a ballet dancer until 1952. In 1930 she married the Soviet diplomat Lev Mikhailovich Karachan .

In 1935 and 1936 she performed with the Ballet de l'Opéra de Paris in Giselle . Her partner was Serge Lifar .

After finishing her career as a dancer, she worked as a pedagogue at the Bolshoi Theater. Her students included Swetlana Adyrchajewa , Nino Ananiaschwili , Natalja Bessmertnowa , Rimma Karelskaja , Marina Kondratjewa , Nadeschda Pavlova , Maja Plissezkaja , Lyudmila Semenjaka , Nina Sorokina and Nikolai Tsiskaridze .

In 1941 she was awarded the Stalin Prize. In 1975 she was honored as a People's Artist of the USSR , in 1988 as a Hero of Socialist Labor .

In 2004 she finished working at the Bolshoi Theater. In 2008 her 100th birthday was celebrated there.

Semyonova had been married to the Soviet Deputy Foreign Minister Lev Karachan since 1930 , who fell victim to Stalin's purges in 1937 . She later married Vsevolod Aksyonov , with whom she had the daughter Ekaterina, who is also a former ballerina of the Bolshoi Ballet .

Marina Semyonova died three days before her 102nd birthday in her home in Moscow.
