Marinus Anton Donk

Marinus Anton Donk (born August 14, 1908 in Situbondo , Java , † September 2, 1972 ) was a Dutch botanist and mycologist . His botanical-mycological author's abbreviation is " Donk ".

Life

Donk was born in Java and graduated from high school in the Netherlands and studied biology at Utrecht University .

As a student he was already working mycologically and in 1930 completed the first part of his revision of the Dutch Heterobasidiomycetae and Homobasidiomycetae-Aphyllophorales . In 1933 he received his doctorate with the second part of this work and then returned to Java, where he worked from 1934 to 1940 as a teacher and from 1941 as custodian in the herbarium of the Buitenzorg Botanical Garden . During the Second World War he was interned by the Japanese occupation, and valuable records and manuscripts were lost.

In 1947 he became head of the “Herbarium Bogoriense Buitenzorg” and returned to the Netherlands in 1956, where he was appointed head of the mycological department of the Rijksherbarium in Leiden .

research

The main research area of ​​Donk was the taxonomy of fungi, especially the Aphyllophorales and Heterobasidiomycetes . He played a leading role in the development of a modern system for classifying the Aphyllophorales and had a significant influence on the nomenclature rules for mushrooms. Many genera, species and combinations of species bear his name.
