Subsidence of the terrain after the collapse of former brown coal underground tunnels |
As posthorn ponds (also Mötzlicher ponds two ponds in the north of the city are called) Halle (Saale) , respectively. They are of anthropogenic origin.
Until 1961, lignite was mined underground in the "Frohe Zukunft" mine in the north of the city . The tunnels later partially collapsed, creating subsidence in the terrain. Both ponds were created by the groundwater and rainwater collecting in the depressions.
Both ponds are shallow and reach depths of three to four meters. The larger pond to the west has a water surface of around 20 hectares, the smaller one of 5 hectares.
The ponds are threatened with drying out and silting up due to a lack of water. By August 2019, the water level had halved to around 2 m. It is hoped that the water level will be increased and stabilized by introducing rainwater from the nearby penal institution, which is currently under construction.
Today they serve as fishing waters.
