former open-cast lignite mine |
The Osendorfer See , also called Dieskauer See , is an anthropogenic lake in Saxony-Anhalt . It is located in the Radewell / Osendorf district of the Ammendorf district in the southeast of the city of Halle (Saale) and was created as a post-mining landscape in the former Ammendorf district .
history
The name of the lake is derived from the nearby village of Osendorf . It is the remaining open pit lake of the opencast lignite mine "Hermine Henriette I" in the Ammendorfer Revier . The excavation of the pit took place in 1888. As a result of a water ingress in 1890, a clay dam was built between the nearby Reide and the pit. In 1927, the “Hermine Henriette” open-cast mine was combined with the nearby “vd Heydt” mine to form a large open-cast mine . With the end of the Second World War or shortly thereafter, the lignite mining ended. Lake formation began with inflowing groundwater and rainwater.
The lignite mining had caused considerable changes in the local water balance. In order not to endanger the slope stability, the water level had to be kept artificially low. With the expansion of the lake into a training and regatta course for canoe racing in the 1950s, banks were planted and paved in the area of the racing center to counteract erosion.
From 1975 onwards, the lakeshore was refurbished and the racetrack was expanded in order to be able to paddle the 1,000 m distances required for international races. For this, the lake was partly widened and the banks were straightened. The reconstruction of the regatta course was completed by 1981.
The water level of the lake is below the groundwater level and is artificially 74.2 m above sea level. NHN kept in order not to endanger the slope stability. The excess water is pumped out into the Reide. This regulation continues to this day.
The Osendorfer See canoeing center is located on the lake. Due to the low pH value of the water and the sometimes dangerously steep bank slopes , the lake is not suitable for swimming.
