The Hufeisensee is an anthropogenic lake in Saxony-Anhalt . It is located in the urban area of Halle (Saale) and is a post-mining landscape in the former Ammendorfer district .

location

The Hufeisensee is located in the Kanena part of the Kanena / Bruckdorf district in the east of Halle. It is the largest lake in the Halle area. The lake, formerly also known as a horseshoe pond, owes its name to its shape, which is reminiscent of a horseshoe . It extends about 1200 meters in north-south and 1300 meters in east-west direction. It is up to 400 meters wide and the lake has an area of approx. 71–72 hectares . The depth is about 9 meters and 28 meters at the deepest point and the visibility in the lake is up to 6 meters. It is one of the largest and, at 28 meters, one of the deepest lakes in the Halle area.

history

In the Ammendorfer Revier , brown coal was mined industrially for the first time from 1832 . 1926 took place between Büschdorf and Bruckdorf of digestion of mine von der Heydt as the largest open pit in the city of Halle. After the lignite deposits in 1942 were broken down, the mine was in the 1960s to decommissioning gravel promoted.

Water was regularly taken from a pumping station of the former " LPG 'Ernst Thälmann' Halle-Saale-Gemüse" on the northern edge of the lake. On the one hand, it served to irrigate the fields in the area and, on the other hand, the water level was to be maintained, as groundwater flowing in caused the level to rise again and again. As a result, the water level was sometimes lowered too far and when pumping was stopped in the late 1970s, the pump house fell into disrepair.

A new pump was installed on the north-eastern edge of the lake, but it was used to irrigate the fields with a lower output. The pumping operation was stopped in 1989 after the turnaround and the end of the existence of the LPG. There was also a pumping station for level maintenance at the southernmost point near Kanena / Bruckdorf . Here the pressure pipeline was led into an open channel with three field lanes crossings at a height of approx. 8 meters. The channel (resident designation: "Wassergraben") ran parallel to the current Schkeuditzer Strasse and ended at the intersection of Schkeuditzer Strasse and Wallendorfer Strasse in the local sewer system. Operation continued until around 1975.

Since 1997 there has been an 800 meter long connection and an overflow to the nearby Reide stream . The main task of this overflow is to adequately lower the water level and create a biotope in which numerous amphibians now live.

The Horseshoe Lake is a popular recreational area and fishing water. Over the years, various trees and shrubs that were planted in 1991 grew on the now partially fortified shores of the lake. The first reforestation “inside” the horseshoe took place at the end of the 1950s. In summer, the large water area offers many bathers relaxation in addition to water skiing and diving.

The city of Halle is forbidden to swim in the Hufeisensee. This was due to the constant entry of toxins such as vinyl chloride from the nearby industrial areas in the east of Halle. With a vinyl chloride content of up to 13 micrograms per liter of sea water, the horseshoe lake is permanently above the limit value for drinking water. Only 0.5 micrograms per liter are allowed there. The city of Halle (Saale) is having a look at the extent to which this limit value should also be used for bathing water. In the case of a small inquiry in the state parliament of Saxony-Anhalt it was determined that the limit values for drinking water were to be applied in the case of the Hufeisensee. Despite the bathing ban and the strong carcinogenic effect of the toxins, the horseshoe lake is a popular bathing water in summer.

The number of fish species in the water has increased in recent years, and in 2005 divers discovered a species of shrimp. The swarm -forming floating shrimp (Hemimysis anomala) were first discovered in an inland lake in Central Germany; biologists from the Martin Luther University in Halle-Wittenberg described the appearance as a biological sensation. The lake and its surroundings are also a suitable habitat for numerous water birds.

After the lake was released from mountain supervision , the city of Halle, as legal successor, planned to build a leisure and sports center in 2003, but the corresponding tendering process is still pending in the 2010s. It was planned to have a golf course, football stadium, water ski facility, campsite, seaside resort and much more. A planned football stadium was not built, instead within the foundations of the old Kurt Wabbel Stadium.

A golf course was officially opened in 2017. Furthermore, a few strips of sand were piled up on the west bank and a 3 m wide circular path was built. There are plans to expand the water ski facility, which has been operated with motor boats so far. A water ski facility based on masts and rope hoist has been applied for, advertised and an investor (of two applicants) has been awarded the contract

There are ideas for setting up a natural pool on the north side. It should be based on the existing conditions and be built with the least possible interference with nature, with mobile systems instead of the stationary ones. The city is now planning to leave this area to nature unused.
