Remaining lake from a limestone quarry |
The quarry lake Halle-Neustadt is located in the southwest of the Neustadt district of Halle (Saale) south of the federal highway 80 . Mesozoic Lower Muschelkalk was mined here for the cement works in Nietleben between 1911 and 1973 . Remains of the transport cable car can still be seen today in the form of a cable car bridge over the federal highway 80 ( 51 ° 28 ′ 36.9 ″ N , 11 ° 53 ′ 26.3 ″ E ).
When the quarrying stopped, groundwater and rainwater filled the quarry and today's lake was created. Originally, the north, east and south sides of the lake were surrounded by steep limestone rock walls up to ten meters high . In the course of safety measures to prevent possible rock breaks, the steep banks had to be flattened in 2005.
Like the Heidesee and Bruchsee lakes, the lake is subject to artificial dewatering by pumping out. Otherwise the water level would be higher.
