Church pond in Halle (Saale)

The church pond in the Neustadt district of Halle (Saale) is a former arm of the Saale . It got its name because of its proximity to the Passendorf church . It is around 950 meters long, has a maximum width of 25 meters and an area of around 5 hectares. Its depth is about two meters. Due to the unusual ratio of its length to width, it has a tubular shape with several turns.

The church pond is traversed in a west-east direction by the Roßgraben , which after its exit then also flows through the triangular pond. The ditch then crosses under federal highway 80 and flows into the Saale. Since its construction, the groundwater level for the Neustadt district has been artificially kept low with the help of a well and pump gallery (146 pieces) along Gimritzer Damm and Bundesstraße 80. A small part of the groundwater collected in this way is fed into the church pond.

The church pond is part of the Südpark recreational area .
