former gravel pit in the immediate vicinity of the Saale |
The Kröllwitz gravel pit is the name given to two bodies of water in the Kröllwitz district in the north-west of Halle (Saale) .
The former gravel pit is located in the immediate vicinity of the Saale . Gravel was mined here until the mid-1960s . The gravel was used for construction in the city of Halle, but gravel was also shipped for the construction of the port of Hamburg. In the 1970s, the dike leading to the Saale was softened by several floods in the Saale, and there was a water ingress. However, the breakthrough was sealed again.
After another water ingress in 1994, the breakthrough was not repaired, so that the gravel pits serve as flood areas during floods.
The pits formed two bodies of water; the southern larger Grubensee, which is called Kiesgrube Kröllwitz , and the northern small lake ( Kleine Kiesgrube Kröllwitz ). The larger lake is connected to the Saale by a ditch to transfer excess water.
The gravel pit lakes have always been used as fishing waters and are part of a landscape protection area .
