Remaining lake of the lignite mine |
The Friedhofsteich (also called the pond on Granauer Berg ) is a stagnant body of water in the west of the city of Halle (Saale) .
Emergence
It was created in the remaining open pit of the closed lignite mine "Alt-Zscherben" (formerly "Royal Prussian lignite mine near Zscherben"), the coal of which (from 1876 on the Pfannlichen coal railway ) was mainly delivered to the Halle saltworks . The mining operation lasted at least until July 1944, possibly also a little beyond the end of the Second World War .
description
The pond has a water surface of 5.3 ha and a maximum depth of 20 m. It has been under protection as an area natural monument since 1979.
etymology
The names are derived from the nearby Halle-Neustadt cemetery and the Granau settlement, which has been deserted since the Thirty Years' War .
