Well house of the Gesundbrunnen
The fountain

The Gesundbrunnen is a spring with a well house on Max-Lademann-Straße in the southern district of Halle (Saale) .

history

The source has probably been known for a long time, but it was not mentioned for the first time until 1310 in a deed of donation from Archbishop Burchhard to the Moritz monastery in Halle. It was referred to as the "holy spring". Their water was considered medicinal water. After the Reformation it was not used and the spring fell into disrepair, probably because the “holy fountain” was previously the destination of Catholic pilgrimages.

Because of the plague epidemics of the 17th century, the renewed use of the medicinal water for the prevention or treatment of diseases began in 1646 and the “holy spring” became the “healthy well” - but it was once again forgotten. With the erection of the first octagonal well house at the instigation of King Friedrich I in 1710, a new phase of use began.

At the time of Johann Christian Reil , who bought the spring in 1807, it was part of a lively spa business, with the actual spa being located in a different location in what was then Fürstenthalstrasse (today Franz-Schubert-Strasse). Even Wilhelm Grimm was one of the guests and was treated with the healing water. With the death of Reil the decay of the well house began.

It was not until 1900 that the fountain was given a new house by Rehorst. The fountain house then fell into disrepair again, until in 2008 the citizens' association "Brunnenhaus Gesundbrunnen Halle eV" began to renovate the fountain house with the help of donations. The work was finished in May 2012.

Building

The current building dates from around 1900. The fountain house has a regular octagonal floor plan. The sides of the octagon are about 2.2 meters. The total width of the house is approx. 5.35 meters. The base is faced with red bricks and is closed by a cornice . The area of the house above is equipped with arched windows and an arched door on the eight sides and ends with a ledge towards the roof. The roof is designed as a baroque tail hood .

water

The water contains minerals , iron and carbonic acid. Today the spring water is drained into the Saale via the public drainage network .

Gesundbrunnen as a name

The Gesundbrunnen spring is often named after the area. She was the godfather for the surrounding district of “ Gesundbrunnen ”, for an outdoor swimming pool that no longer exists, for the “Gesundbrunnenkirche” and its community, and for the street “Am Gesundbrunnen”.
