The Kreuzer ponds are three ponds of different sizes in the Kröllwitz district of Halle (Saale) . The area in which the ponds are located has a north-south extension of about 50 meters. In east-west direction it is approx. 160 meters. The water areas of the ponds amount to approximately 350, 550 and 3,000 square meters, their maximum depth is 1.5 m.
The ponds were created in the 15th century. They served as a sheep flood in a large sheep farm. After the Second World War they were used as fish ponds until the 1960s and then abandoned.
Since then, together with the Amselgrund located on the nearby bank of the Saale, they have formed a biotope network consisting of alternately moist meadows, rocky slopes, dry and semi-dry lawns, ponds, forest and bush zones. The Kreuzer ponds are one of the most biodiverse urban biotopes with two newt and two toad species and four different frog species. Every year in spring you can watch the toad migration from the Saale floodplain to the Kreuzer ponds.
Kreuzer ponds and Amselgrund form a conservation area of approximately twelve hectares. The excess water from the Kreuzer ponds flows over the Amselgrund into the Saale .
