Mario Arpino

Mario Arpino (born July 20, 1937 in Tarvisio ) is a retired Italian general . In the Gulf War (1991) he commanded a unit of the Italian Air Force that was deployed there . In 1995 he became Chief of Staff of the Italian Air Force, in 1999 Chief of Staff of the Italian Armed Forces.

Career

Arpino attended the Air Force Academy from 1956 to 1959 and became a pilot in 1960 . As a result, he mainly served in fighter squadrons, where he mainly flew " Starfighter " aircraft. He completed the general staff courses at the command academies of the air force and the armed forces . He commanded u. a. a squadron for electronic warfare and an air transport unit. From 1987 to 1989 Arpino headed the Italian Air Force Academy.

From October 1990 to March 1991, he coordinated the operations of an Italian tornado squadron on the coalition's command staff in Riyadh , which took part in the Gulf War from a base in the United Arab Emirates .

From 1995 to 1999 he was Chief of Staff at the helm of the Italian Air Force, which was restructured as part of a general reform of the armed forces. The experience he had gained on the command staff in Riyadh during the Gulf War had a decisive influence on Arpino's reform work .

From 1999 to 2001 Mario Arpino was Chief of Staff of the Italian Armed Forces . In this role he continued the reform work of his predecessor, Admiral Guido Venturoni . Arpino's successor was General Rolando Mosca Moschini .

Arpino has received numerous awards and has achieved over 5,000 flight hours in his career as a pilot.
