Mario Rigoni star

Mario Rigoni Stern (born November 1, 1921 in Asiago , † June 16, 2008 ibid) was an Italian author, veteran of the Second World War . He belonged to the Cimbri language minority .

Life

Rigoni Stern became an Italian soldier in 1938. His first and best-known novella Il sergente nella neve ( Alpini in the Russian Snow ) from 1953 deals with his own experiences that Rigoni Stern had to make as a sergeant in the Alpini Corps during the loss-making retreat from Russia during the Second World War. Other well-known works are Le stagioni di Giacomo (in German: Giacomos Jahreszeiten ), Storia di Tönle and the anthology of short stories Sentieri sotto la neve (in German: Paths under the snow ). Rigoni Stern was imprisoned in Hohenstein in 1943 as an Italian military internee .

Mario Rigoni Stern received the Premio Campiello and the Premio Bagutta for Storia di Tönle , as well as the Premio Bancarellino for Il sergente nella neve . In 1997 he was awarded the Antonio Feltrinelli Prize .

Primo Levi called him "one of the greatest writers in Italy".

The Premio Mario Rigoni Stern literary prize has been awarded for recent works on Alpine cultural history since 2011 .
