Marion Seelig
Marion Seelig (born January 3, 1953 in Berlin ; † March 12, 2013 there ) was a German civil rights activist for the GDR opposition and a politician of the Die Linke party . From 1990 until her death in 2013 she was a member of the Berlin House of Representatives .
Life
Seelig grew up in the former East Berlin district of Mitte . Her father moved to the western part of Berlin in 1961 . After graduating from high school in 1971, she was an intern at the Berliner Zeitung until 1974 . However, because of her father's relocation, she was not admitted to the university. Until 1975 she was an editor in the Berlin House for Cultural Work , then she worked as a freelance writer, in particular of radio plays for the GDR radio ( Eisenhand from 1986, Die Frühlingsgeige from 1988 and Princess Tausendschön and the South Sea island Taka-Tuka from 1990) and the broadcaster free Berlin ( stays in the country from 1988 and between the borders live the poets from 1989) as well as stories a. Poems. She was married for the second time and had three children. Seelig died in Berlin after a serious illness.
Political development
In 1978 she and others initiated the regular children's seminars of the Protestant Church and took part in peace decades and seminars. Her active political work began at the latest in 1982 as a signatory of a petition to the State Council of the GDR against a new military service law by the women for peace movement . In 1983 she founded the internationally oriented two-thirds world children's group Banana and from that year also worked in several human rights groups of the civic movements, including the Berlin Zionskirche , the Church from Below and in the group Gegenstimmen . Since 1987 she has been working in the church from below and in 1988/89 organized vigils, protest services and fundraising for persecuted people in the group "Concrete Solidarity", including after the GDR organs attacked the environmental library and the arrests at Liebknecht -Luxembourg demonstration and the relegation of students from the Carl-von-Ossietzky-EOS . In the critical year 1989, she was involved in the founding of the United Left participated, was the speaker and presented this at the round table of the GDR. In 1990 she was elected to the Berlin House of Representatives on the PDS open list . Since then she has been a member of Parliament without interruption, making it one of the longest standing members. It was not until 1999 that she became a member of the PDS. From 1996 to 2010 she was also the chairwoman of the German-Kurdish Friendship Association.
Her main areas of work were civil rights , migration and data protection . Seelig was seen as a representative of the realpolitical party wing with a civil rights orientation.
