Belgium's Kustwachtcentrale consists of two pillars: the MRCC Oostende and the MIK ( Maritiem Informatie Kruispunt ) at the naval base in Zeebrugge . Both centers work closely together and exchange their information promptly.

The MIC functions as a maritime security center for the Belgian maritime area of the North Sea , which of the busiest shipping routes is one of the world. Customs , the Maritime Police and the Ministry of Defense have been working together at this center since 2007 to ensure that all maritime laws are observed. This fulfills the requirements of the ISPS code for increasing safety at sea, which were developed after the attacks of September 11, 2001 .

The MIK combines a large number of tasks of the Flemish and federal (Belgian) government agencies with authority at sea:

The three participating organizations each operate their own databases , the information of which is collated and analyzed in the MIK. This means that bundled information is available for decisions.

For these tasks, helicopters and surveillance aircraft are made available by the Belgian military at their base in Koksijde . The coast guard partner Vloot (German fleet ) provides the required ships. The newest ships are the patrol ships (Ready Duty Ships) 'Castor' (2014) and 'Pollux' (2015) in action for fisheries control, police tasks , customs controls , pollution control and rescue operations at sea. The coast guard has had the new multi-purpose ship 'Sirius' since 2017. It is used for search and rescue, fire fighting, sea fishing control, oil skimming and towing duties . It also functions as a buoy laying ship and as a measuring ship for hydrographic and hydrological investigations.
