The RoRo freighters were commissioned in January 2008 in a series of four ships from the Japanese construction yard Mitsubishi Heavy Industries in Nagasaki. The type ship Tønsberg was laid down in 2009 with hull number 2262 . On October 2, 2010 the ship was launched and in March 2011 the Tønsberg was put into service. It was followed by the identical Parsifal for Wallenius. Then came the Tysla for Wilhelmsen and the Salome for Wallenius, two almost identical sister ships , each with a carrying capacity of around 2000 tons greater than that of the first two ships in the series.
The ships are operated on journeys lasting around 110 to 120 days as part of a "round the world" joint service from Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics . The main cargo is motor vehicles, but numerous other rolling goods and special loads of all kinds are also transported on the nine decks.
