Mark Wainberg

Mark Arnold Wainberg (born 21st April 1945 in Montreal , died on 11. April 2017 in Miami , Florida , United States ) was a Canadian physician who to AIDS and HIV researcher and 1989 the drug lamivudine (short: 3TC) developed.

Life

After graduating from McGill University in Montreal with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1966 , Wainberg received a PhD from Columbia University , New York , in 1972 . He then conducted research at the Hadassah Medical School of the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. From 1998 to 2000 Wainberg was President of the International AIDS Society (IAS) . He was the organizer of the 13th International AIDS Conference in 2000 in Durban (South Africa). Until his death, he headed the AIDS research department at the Lady Davis Institute in Montréal and the AIDS center at McGill University. In April 2017, he was killed in a swimming accident on the Florida coast.
