Mark Bodē

Mark Vaughn Anthony Bodē (born February 18, 1963 in New York Utica ) is an American comic book artist , tattoo artist and graffiti artist . He is the son of the underground comix -Zeichners Vaughn Bode . In addition to the publication of his own work and his activity as a tattoo artist, he repeatedly creates new editions of his father's works and ensures that they are published so that Vaughn Bodē's works remain accessible to a wide audience. Mark Bodē has published various comic books and albums of his own, articles in comic magazines such as Heavy Metal and Epic Illustrated , and tattoo designs in a book and various magazines. His work has been shown in numerous exhibitions in North America, Europe and Australia.

Life

Early years

Mark was born to Vaughn Bodē and his wife Barbara. Mark began drawing as a three-year-old boy and it was clear to him early on that, like his father, he wanted to become an artist.

In 1972 the parents' marriage broke up. Mark subsequently grew up with his mother. During a stay with his father in 1975, he died in an autoerotic suicide accident. Twelve year old Mark was present when his uncle Vincent forcibly opened the bedroom door of Vaughn and found his lifeless body.

Bodē studied art at the School of Visual Arts in New York and the College of Marin in California from 1981 to 1984, and animation at San Francisco State University from 1984 to 1985 .

Career

comics

After Vaughn Bodē's death in 1975, his estate, and with it the rights to his work, passed into the possession of his ex-wife Barbara Bodē (after another marriage, Barbara Fallon) and his son Mark. In the following years, Barbara made sure that Vaughn's art continued to be published. Mark later increasingly took on this task. Among other things, he edited and published a work edition by his father, which was published in 14 volumes by Fantagraphics Books from 1988 to 2001. In addition, Mark worked out various ideas from his father, some of which he had left behind only as concepts or sketches. For example, the story The Lizard of Oz , which was released as an album in 2004 , or the series Cobalt 60 , which is based on a ten-page short story by Vaughn Bodē.

As a child he was already coloring his father's comics, and Vaughn had a profound influence on Mark's own style. However, Mark also had a certain influence on his father's work, for example the character Frankenstein Lizard from the story Cheech Wizard Bogart a Pud goes back to an idea of the young Mark.

Mark's first work appeared in 1978 in Cosmic Circus , a comic book that included work by Vaughn Bodē and Larry Todd, as well as a story by Mark Bodē and John Burnham , who also designed the cover. Shortly afterwards, Heavy Metal magazine commissioned Mark Bodē to colorize the story of Zook , which his father had drawn in the early 1970s. The colored version of Zooks appeared in Heavy Metal from January to April 1980 and this release can be seen as the beginning of Mark's career as a cartoonist.

With publications such as the Gyro Comics and the extremely successful series Miami Mice , Mark also managed to establish himself as an independent artist. Miami Mice is one of the best-selling black and white American comics ever. He drew several volumes in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series, created by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird .

His greatest success is certainly the Cobalt 60 series . Vaughn Bodē had already created the character in 1959 and made some character sketches and a short story in 1968, but then did not pursue the concept any further. Mark Cobalt 60 worked out for Epic Illustrated with copywriter Larry Todd, who was a friend and colleague of his father's . The series appeared in the magazine published by Marvel Comics in 1984 and 1985 . The series has published seven volumes so far. On the initiative of Zack Snyder , who is a fan of the series, Universal Studios secured the rights to a film adaptation of Cobalt 60 in 2011 . A real film was planned to be directed by Snyder. So far the project has not been implemented.

graffiti

Although he was never active as a graffiti artist himself, Vaughn Bodē enjoyed a legendary reputation in the graffiti scene after early and influential artists such as Dondi , Zephyr and Mare139 appropriated his characters in the 1970s. This brought Mark into contact with the sprayer scene and he started spraying graffiti in 1986. He developed into an influential artist on the graffiti scene. Images of his work appear in magazines such as Graphotism and While You Were Sleeping , as well as in books on graffiti art, such as Spraycan Art by Henry Chalfant and James Prigoff . In Bridgeport, Connecticut, there were several graffiti festivals dedicated to Vaughn and Mark Bodē, such as Every Bode Get Up! 2002 and Lizard King Ball 2003. In addition to Mark, around 20 artists each took part in these meetings.

Tattoos

Since 1994 Bodē has also been active as a tattoo artist. His tattoos are featured in magazines such as Juxtapoz and Tabu Tattoo . In 2013 he published The Big Book of Bodē Tattoos , which contains over 400 of his tattoo designs.

Private life

Mark Bodē lives in San Francisco and works as a tattoo artist at Sacred Rose Tattoos in Berkeley . He is married and has a daughter.
