Mark Stephen Critz (born January 5, 1962 in Irwin , Westmoreland County , Pennsylvania ) is an American politician . Between 2010 and 2013 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives . In the 2012 election he was defeated by his Republican competitor Keith Rothfus .

Critz studied at Indiana University in Pennsylvania until 1987 . Then he worked as a private businessman. Among other things, he was the manager of a Roy Rogers restaurant in Wilmington ( Delaware ). After that he worked temporarily in the construction industry. Politically, he became a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1998 and 2010 he was on the staff of Congressman John Murtha .

After Murtha's death, Critz was elected in the by-election for the twelfth seat of Pennsylvania as his successor to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he took up his new mandate on May 18, 2010. After being re-elected, he was able to exercise his mandate in Congress until January 3, 2013. Critz was a member of the Armed Forces Committee and the Committee on Small Business and a total of five sub-committees. He was also a member of eight Congressional Caucuses . In mid-2013, Critz considered running for the same seat again in the 2014 election , but instead chose to run as Lieutenant Governor of Pennsylvania in 2014.

He has two children with his wife; the family lives in Johnstown .
