Mark Kozelek (born January 24, 1967 in Massillon , Ohio , USA ) is an American singer, songwriter and actor. He is also the founder of Red House Painters and Sun Kil Moon. He lives in San Francisco and starred in films like Almost Famous and Vanilla Sky .

Career

Kozelek played in the band God Forbid in his hometown at a young age. After moving to Atlanta, Kozelek met Anthony Koutsos, the future drummer of the Red House Painters, and with him, after moving to San Francisco, founded the band with guitarist Gorden Mack and bassist Jerry Vessel, which became one of the pioneers of slowcore has been. Between 1992 and 2001 the Red House Painters released seven albums and the Shock Me EP , on which the song of the same name was reinterpreted by Kiss in a quiet guise. This idea was so appealing to Kozelek that he took it up again and again later. Problems with her label led to years of delays in the album Old Ramon and, as a result, to the end of the Red House Painters.

From 1999 Kozelek also pursued a solo career, during which he a. a. with What's Next To The Moon a full album with quiet folk versions of AC / DC rhythm songs published, and appeared in several films. In 2002 he published a book of lyrics with Noites de Atropelo in Portugal, an English version of which was also published in 2008. Since 2003 Kozelek has also published his music with the Sun Kil Moon project, of which he is the only permanent member. There he took up the concept of transferring songs from outside the genre to his sparsely orchestrated music by covering songs by Modest Mouse on the album Tiny Cities .

He produced the albums Demerol and River of Darkness of the singer friend Hannah Marcus and assisted Richard Buckner with the arrangements for his Unreleased LP . Kozelek supported the band Retribution Gospel Choir, a side project of the befriended band Low , first as a member and later as a producer of their debut of the same name.
